Mining's Workforce Crunch: Why Faster Hiring Needs Faster Verification

An experienced diesel fitter applies for a role on your site. Her tickets were issued interstate. Her last VOC was signed off by another contractor. Her CV is strong and you need her next week.
Then the paperwork starts. Emails to previous employers. Scanned certificates. A full re-induction and a repeat of training she has already done. Weeks later, she's still not on the tools.
Multiply that by every new starter, and the skills shortage gets worse inside your own onboarding process.
What the industry is saying
The Minerals Council of Australia says mining is facing a workforce crunch, with nearly half of mining engineers expected to retire within the next decade. It lists mining, geotechnical and processing engineers, metallurgists, geologists, electricians, mine surveyors, diesel fitters and drillers among the roles companies can't fill (Minerals Council of Australia).
The MCA's submission to the federal inquiry into skilled migration calls for faster processing and accelerated licensing, and points to credential barriers as one reason the system responds slowly to industry needs (Minerals Council of Australia). Skilled migrants make up about 1.24% of the minerals workforce, but fill specialised roles that are hard to source locally (The Coalface).
The domestic pipeline matters too. Apprentices and trainees have made up about 4.4% of the mining workforce over the past 15 years, with close to 11,000 currently in training (Mining Weekly).
What the crunch looks like on site
A tighter labour market changes who walks through the gate. Workers arrive from more places, with more variation in how their skills were trained and recorded:
Cross-sector movers. Tradespeople from construction, energy or manufacturing, with tickets that are valid but site experience that's new.
Interstate and overseas workers. Credentials issued under different systems, in different formats, sometimes in different languages.
Apprentices and new entrants. Workers who need structured pathways and close tracking from day one.
Short-term contractors. Specialists brought in for shutdowns and projects, often for weeks rather than months.
Each group creates the same pressure: get them on the tools fast. That's where the risk sits.
The trade-off nobody should have to make
When people are scarce, two shortcuts are tempting. The first is to skip checks and trust the paperwork. The second is to retrain everyone from scratch to be safe. One creates compliance risk. The other wastes the time of the workers you fought hardest to hire.
Neither is necessary when verified skills can move with the worker. For more on cutting repeat training, read How LAAMP's Transferable Digital Passports Are Solving Australia's Skills Mobility Crisis.
How LAAMP gets new workers productive without cutting corners
Skills that travel with proof.Transferable skills passports carry verified credentials across sites, projects and organisations, so trust doesn't start from zero.
Competence confirmed on your equipment. Digital practical assessments and VOCs capture photo and video evidence, so you confirm what a worker can do on your site without repeating training they've already completed. See Getting VOC Right.
Identity verified at every assessment.LAAMP AI confirms the person completing an assessment is the worker on record, wherever they came from.
Induction before arrival. Workers complete inductions on any device, online or offline, before their first shift. Multilingual training supports workers whose first language isn't English.
Pathways for new entrants. Development pathways and digital logbooks track apprentices and trainees from their first module to sign-off.
Access tied to readiness. ENTRII links site access to the same record, so new starters only reach the areas they're trained and authorised for.
Four questions to ask your onboarding process
How long does it take a qualified new starter to go from offer to productive work?
How much of that time is spent repeating training the worker has already done?
How do you verify credentials issued interstate or overseas?
Can a supervisor see, in one place, what a new worker is cleared to do?
If onboarding drags on for skills you've already confirmed exist, the shortage is partly self-made.
Speed with proof
The workforce crunch won't be solved by one company's onboarding process. But every day a qualified worker waits to start is a day of skills you've paid for and can't use. LAAMP helps mining and construction teams mobilise new workers faster, with evidence behind every credential, so your whole workforce is trained, verified and compliant.
